I met Mr. Beard in the spring of 2008 at a Georgetown scrimmage.  He was there to observe other
officials that were working that day.  He was kind enough to also give me his observations of my
work.  He then asked if I was going to go work another scrimmage at Morgan State later that day.
I proceeded to work at Morgan State that afternoon.  He also watched me work that afternoon at
Morgan State and provide me with a little more “hands-on” feedback of my game.  I only had the
opportunity to get in front of Mr. Beard that one day in 2008 but he left a lasting impression on me.

I was very excited and honored to be assigned a First round Division III playoff game in 2010 at
Alfred University.  I tried to treat the time leading up to the game as a normal week.  I did my best
to keep my emotions under control.  As I was awaiting the opening kickoff and was standing at the
goal line pylon, for about 15 seconds or so, my emotions got the best of me as I thought about
everyone who was responsible for getting me to this point in my officiating career, including my
family, my fellow officials, and the one day I spent with Mr. Beard.

Once the kickoff was returned and fumbled by SUNY-Maritime, I realized it was just another
football game.

Yours in officiating,
