Tom Beard was renowned in the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area for his
commitment and dedication to Football Officiating at the Federation, Collegiate, and
Professional Levels. Tom had a sincere passion for training and developing football
officials to becoming the very best that they can be.
Several years ago, Tom organized weekly training sessions for football officials from
Washington, DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia. The primary focus of the sessions
was to train and develop football officials so that they are highly qualified and well
prepared. The sessions were held on the campus of Howard University (Washington,
DC) and consisted of rules/mechanics discussions, video review, and scrimmages.
Session attendees had the advantage of receiving regular instructions and
assessments from some of the top resources within all levels of officiating. Many of the
officials attending the sessions have progressed with successful careers in the NCAA
and NFL.
In alignment with Tom's focus of training and developing officials, the 5th Annual Tom
Beard's Football Officials Clinic (TBFOC) will be held on March 16-17, 2012. The
primary clinic location was Morgan State University (Baltimore, MD) with a secondary
location of Bowie State University (Bowie, MD). The Clinic's agenda included group
sessions, position breakout meetings, and extended enhanced scrimmage field-time.
A highly-renowned group of Collegiate and NFL officials and supervisors were
carefully selected to facilitate the Clinic's sessions.
